Dr. Daniel Frederick "Dan" Daniel - 1944-2009
Dr. Daniel Frederick "Dan" Daniel, 65, Southwestern College emeritus professor, died Dec. 13, 2009, in Edgewood, Ky.
Dan Daniel was born Jan. 17, 1944, in Columbus, Ohio, to L. Marshall and Ruth Murray Daniel. He graduated from high school in Ashland and earned a bachelor's degree in English literature at Berea College in Berea, Ky. He earned a master's degree at the University of Chicago and a doctorate at the University of Wisconsin.
Dan came to Winfield in 1970.
He taught English literature at Southwestern College for 39 years until retiring April 1, 2008. Dan was an early supporter of "Jan-Term" at Southwestern, when short courses and field trips were offered between semesters. He was the originator in 1992 of an integrated studies program for freshmen and sophomores. That program gained national attention and was adopted by other colleges.
Dan developed a strong interest in the interconnectedness of fields of knowledge. In 1998, he and Reza Sarhangi co-founded the Bridges Conference on connections between mathematics and art. The conference continues; its 2009 site was Banff Center, Canada.
A lover of Shakespeare, Dan was active in Shakespeare on the Walnut in Winfield. He acted in several Winfield Community Theatre productions, including the lead in "The Dresser." Dan was an avid fan of the Walnut Valley Festival, locally known as the "Bluegrass." He and his former wife, Kathy, led the crafts at the festival for five years.
Dan did postdoctoral work at the University of Kansas and Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill. He traveled abroad frequently, visiting England, India, China, Morocco and the Soviet Union, among other countries.
In the 1980s, Dan wrote a weekly column for the Winfield Daily Courier.
Dan was preceded in death by his mother, Ruth, in February 2004.
He is survived by his daughter, Rachel Daniel Green, and her partner, Lorrie Green of Lawrenceburg, Ind.; and a grandson, Joshua Daniel Green, also of Lawrenceburg.
Dan's father, L. Marshall Daniel, 93, Ashland, also survives, as do a sister, Marsha Muir, and her husband, Don of Bel Aire, Md., and a brother, Steve Daniel, and his wife, Sally of Virginia Beach, Va.
Dan's former wife, Kathy Docherty of Berea, also survives. A niece, Dawn Marie Frost of Williamsburg, Va., and nephews, Chris Daniel and Brian Daniel of Virginia Beach, survive as well.
