Harold Norris Griffith, 83, of Ashland, passed away Saturday, March 3 in Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital in Russell.
He was born Aug. 9, 1928, in Morgan County, to the late Joseph Edward Griffith and Verna Ellen Hamilton.
He was the general manager for Boyd County Ford in Ashland for the past 20 years. Prior to that he was owner of Griffith-Moore Motor Co. in Ashland and Howes-Griffith Chrysler-Plymouth in Ironton, Ohio.
He was a graduate of the Ashland High School Class of 1946. He was a radio broadcaster and sports writer for the Boonville Enquirer in Boonville, Ind., from 1950 to 1954. He also worked as a sports writer for the Louisville Courier-Journal from 1955 to 1965. He began his career in the automobile industry with Wurts Motor Sales in Ashland from 1956 to 1959 until starting Howes-Griffith Motors in Ironton in 1959. Beginning in 1966, he opened another successful dealership, Griffith-Moore Motor Co., which he owned and ran until 1990. He was past vice president and president of the Kentucky Automobile Dealers Association and a member of Ashland BPO Elks 350 and the Bellefonte Country Club. He was a Kentucky colonel, an avid golfer and a UK fan. He was of the Christian faith.
He was also preceded in death by his wife of 35 years, Ruth Rice Griffith; a son, Jerry Dean; four brothers, Edward Thomas Griffith, Paul Milton Griffith, Paul Erwin Hitchcock and Charles Ishmael Hitchcock; and his special friend, Sue Tutwiler.
Surviving are a son, Terry (Jennifer) Griffith; three daughters, Cindi (Kelly Cantrell) Griffith and Patti (Richard) May, all of Ashland, and Lori (Rich) Donohue of Ironton; and two sisters, Betty Jo Price of Orlando, Fla., and Edith Faye Griffith. Also surviving are grandchildren Heather (Mike) Perkins, Courtney May, Caitlyn, Chris and Cameron Donohue, Kristina Griffith and Kim, Ben and Sean Joiner; and four great-grandchildren, Andrew and Libby Perkins and Rylee and Alex Joiner.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, March 7, 2012, at Steen Funeral Home-Central Avenue Chapel in Ashland. Burial will be in Golden Oaks (East Ashland) Memorial Gardens.
Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, March 6, 2012, and an hour before services at the funeral home.
