Irene Cooksey, 85, passed on to be with the Lord on Thursday, Aug. 9, 2012, in the Transitional Care Unit of Clark Regional Medical Center in Winchester.
She was born Feb. 14, 1927, in Webbville, a daughter of the late Roscoe and Jessie Hayes Daniel. Irene was the loving wife, confidante, partner and best friend of her late husband of 63 years, William E. "Ed" Cooksey.
She was also preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters, Grover B. Daniel, Clinton Daniel, Roscoe Daniel Jr., Bethel Blevins and Eloise Daniel.
Irene lived in Catlettsburg from 1967 to 2009, where upon the death of her husband moved to Winchester to be close to her family. She enjoyed the last few years at Rose Mary Brooks Place, an assisted living facility in Winchester, where she loved spending time with her great-granddaughter, Kenleigh, who affectingly called her "Mammy."
She enjoyed spending time with her family, gardening, sewing and sports, especially UK basketball and Cincinnati Reds baseball. Irene faithfully attended the Route 60 Freewill Baptist Church in Kenova, W.Va., and Yatesville Community Church while living in Catlettsburg. After moving to Winchester she attended Ark of Mercy Church of God and Sunday ministries proved by Rose Mary Brooks Place.
Sadly, Irene leaves behind two sons, Kenneth R. Cooksey and his wife, Vicki, of Winchester and Brenden J. Cooksey and his wife, Bobbi, of Tamassee, S.C.; five grandchildren, Derrick Cooksey, Serah Roy, Jourdan Cooksey, Rachael Clay and Devin Cooksey; three great-grandchildren, Kenleigh Cooksey, Brady Roy and Becket Roy. Irene is also survived by a sister; Maxine Wellman and her husband, Buell, of Columbus, Ohio.
A funeral service to honor the life of Mrs. Cooksey will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 11, 2012, at Kilgore & Collier Funeral Home in Catlettsburg by the Rev. Chad Keathley and the Rev. Paul Cox.
Final rest will follow a solemn committal at Golden Oaks Memorial Gardens in Ashland.
Serving as casket bearers will be Derrick Cooksey, Don Ball, Callis Ferguson, Billy Claypoole, Luke Kitchen and Mike Diamond.
The family wishes to especially thank all of the wonderful staff of the Clark Regional Medical Center's Transitional Care Unit for the compassion and professionalism during her final days in this world.
