Jolly J. Hicks Sr., 77, of Catlettsburg passed peacefully on Saturday, June 9, 2012, at his home with his loving family at his side.

Mr. Hicks was born June 23, 1934, in Catlettsburg, son of the late John H. and Minnie Rowe Hicks.

Jolly served his country honorably in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War, and was a retired utility operator for Aristech Chemical of Neal, W.Va. He was a member of Hampton Lodge 235, Ashland Commandry, El Hasa Shrine, American Legion Post 76, ARKY Stars Square Dance Club, a Kentucky Colonel and former Catlettsburg City Council member. He attended Sandy City Freewill Baptist Church and was a member of Riverview Baptist Church.

Jolly leaves behind his adoring wife of 54 years, Elizabeth "Betsy" Russell Hicks; sons, J.J. Hicks Jr. and his wife, Kathy, John Russell Hicks and his wife, Dana, and Paul K. Hicks and his wife Christina, all of Catlettsburg; six grandchildren, Zachary, Blake, Eric, Caroline, Zane and John; brothers, Paul H. Hicks of Ashland, and Manuel Hicks of Matthews, N.C.; and sisters, Lena Hicks of Lexington and Ruby Bruce of Greenup.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by brothers, Clyde Thomas Hicks and James Prichard Hicks; and sister, Helen Lurch.

A funeral service to honor Jolly Hicks will be at 11 a.m., Tuesday, June 12, 2012, at the Neal Funeral Home in Catlettsburg. Pastor Bob Chaffin and Pastor Mike Blankenship will officiate. Final rest in Golden Oaks Memorial Gardens in Ashland.

Visiting hours are 6 to 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Grandsons will serve as casket bearers.
