Phyllis Carter (1919-2009)
Phyllis Hager Carter, 90, of Flatwoods, Ky., formerly of Lexington, Ky., passed away late Saturday evening, Sept. 5, 2009, in Oakmont Manor Health Care Facility.
Ms. Carter was a daughter of the late Philip and Hager Coldiron Carter, born Aug. 3, 1919, in Catlettsburg, Ky. Phyllis joined the U.S. Navy upon her mother's insistence that she see the world. She served a total of four years and attained the rank of yeoman first class. She was a member of the Christian Science in Lexington.
Phyllis attended Morehead State University and acquired bachelor's and master's degrees in teaching, taught first through third grade in the Lexington area and was also a book consultant. One interesting chapter in her life included being a dance instructor for an Arthur Murray dance studio. She said, "I have had a wonderful life. I am always thankful for the places I have seen and the nice people I have met along the way. The love of Phyllis' life was her four-legged companion, Foxy.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 11, 2009, at Kilgore & Collier Funeral Home on Panola Street in Catlettsburg. Pastor John Moorehead will officiate.
Visitation for family and friends will be after 1 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
