Roger L. Hammond, 76, of Catlettsburg, passed away Monday evening, April 25, 2011, at his home.
Mr. Hammond was born March 8, 1935, at East Point, a son of the late James Harry and Edna Hager Hammond.
He was also preceded in death by a brother, James H. Hammond Jr.
Roger graduated from Paintsville High School and served honorably in the U.S. Army Military Police stationed in Alaska during the Korean War as a "Guardian of the Great Land." He retired in 1996 from Armco Steel, where he worked in the hot strip, steam and power and west processing. He was Little League coach for 30 years at Boyd County National and loved fishing and hunting. He was a member of Oakland Avenue Baptist Church, where he served as a trustee and Royal Ambassadors leader and sang in the choir.
Surviving are Roger's loving wife of 52 years, Ann Bussey Hammond; a daughter, Kathy Woods and her husband, Tim, of Catlettsburg; sons Larry Hammond of Catlettsburg, Jerry Hammond and his wife, Faye, of Ironton, Ohio, and Dennis Hammond of Catlettsburg; a brother, Ronnie Hammond (Kay) of Genoa, Ohio; sisters Betty Rice (Sam) of Ashland and Danna Powers (John) of Ashland; 10 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren
Funeral services for Roger Hammond will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 28, 2011, at Oakland Avenue Baptist Church. Pastor Mike Blankenship will bring a message of comfort. Final rest will be in Golden Oaks Memorial Gardens in Ashland.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Neal Funeral Home on Center Street in Catlettsburg.
