Roscoe Edward "Ed" Stephens - 1931-2009
Roscoe Edward "Ed" Stephens, of Maloneton, Ky., went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, Nov. 5, 2009 in Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland.
He was born June 1, 1931, in Load, Ky., to the late Roscoe and Nellie Sperry Stephens.
He was a member of Wurtland Missionary Baptist Church where he taught Sunday School and sang in the choir. As a lifetime resident of Greenup County, Mr. Stephens served as an educator for 35 years in the Greenup County Schools and also in Boyd County Schools. During that time, he served as a teacher, coach, principal, instructional supervisor and superintendent of Greenup County Schools.
He held both a bachelor's and master's degree from Morehead State University. Mr. Stephens was an avid UK football and basketball fan and a Kentucky colonel. He also served from 1950 to 1952 in the United States Air Force.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Rise Elaine Stephens and two sisters, Mary Stephens Kilgore and Miriam Stephens Burton.
Surviving family members are his loving wife of 54 years, Joan Lemaster Stephens; three sons, Creighton Edward Stephens and Jon David Stephens of Maloneton and Thomas Mark Stephens (Anne) of Greenup; a great-niece, Mary Hafey Johnson of Maloneton; a sister, Lenore Stephens Shipley of Bonifay, Fla.; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation for family and friends will be Sunday, Nov. 8 from 6 to 9 p.m. at Reed Funeral Home in Greenup. Funeral services will be Monday, Nov. 9 at noon at Wurtland Missionary Baptist Church with Brother Butch Kiger, Brother Marvin Boggs and Brother Jim Stephens presiding. Burial will be in Golden Oaks Memorial Gardens in Ashland.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Community Hospice Center, 1538 Central Ave., Ashland, KY 41101.
American Legion Post 23 of Portsmouth, Ohio will conduct military rites.
