Carl McFarland (1925-2009)
William C. "Carl" McFarland, 84, of Catlettsburg, passed away late Friday evening, Nov. 6, 2009, in Hospice House of Huntington. He was born May 25, 1925, to the late William R. and Ethel Spradlin McFarland.
Carl, or "Mack," as he was known by the drivers, retired from Ashland Oil as a driver with the Haulzit Division and was a recipient of the Two Million Mile Safety Award. He also served his country honorably during World War II in the U.S. Marine Corp, Pacific Fleet, where Sgt. McFarland helped turn the tides against the Japanese at the Battle of Midway. Always remembered as a quiet-spoken man of faith, Carl was a member of Liberty Baptist Church and had been superintendent of Burnaugh Baptist Church for many years.
Carl was the loving husband for 53 years to Cora Porter McFarland, who left his side in June of 1998. Their home was blessed with two wonderful children, a daughter, Carla Ross of Catlettsburg, and a son, Michael McFarland and his wife Brenda of Statesville, N.C.; two brothers, Glen McFarland and Robert McFarland, both of Catlettsburg; a sister, Kay Welborn of Catlettsburg; and seven grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, three brothers preceded him in death, David McFarland, Cecil McFarland and Melvin McFarland.
A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 9 at Golden Oaks Memorial Gardens with a committal by Pastor Dicky Tiller. Honorary casket bearers will be Junior McFarland, Glen McFarland, Bryan Ross, Chris McFarland, John Norris and Michael McFarland. Military honors will be observed at the grave.
Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Kilgore & Collier Funeral Home on Panola Street in Catlettsburg.
